Edin Surges Past Gushue into Astec Semifinals

A shocking flash from Brad Gushue left Niklas Edin a draw for three and win in Friday's Quarterfinals. Gushue and his squad of Mark Nichols, Brendan Bottcher, and Geoff Walker were in control at the final end, with a two-point lead on Edin, who had not given up the lead throughout the game. Gushue opened scoring with two points in the third end, using their hammer advantage for going undefeated through the A-event bracket to blank the first two ends and settle into the game. Gushue added a steal in the fourth end to lead 3-0 at the game's halfway point. Edin, with Oskar Eriksson, Rasmus Wrana and Christoffer Sundgren, awoke from their slumber, with Niklas making a thin double to score three and tie the game. Gushue blanked the sixth end and continued to control the game, scoring two points in the seventh end. Edin wound their way through the triple knockout bracket, finishing with a 5-2 record through qualifying. Edin lost their opening game, 8-5 to Brent Pierce of New Westminster BC, following up with a 10-2 win over Saskatoon's Logan Ede. Edin lost again on the B-side, dropping a 5-4 decision that put them at the first round of the C-event. From there, Edin knocked off four straight wins to reach the playoff round, taking down Edmonton's James Ballance (8-6), Howard (5-4), Pierce (5-3) and finishing with a 6-3 win over Calgary's Kevin Koe in the C-Qualifier game on Friday afternoon.
