Beuk Wins Opener at Tankard
Kingston's Jon Beuk (photo: Ontaro Curling) has the experience to be a surprise team this week at the Ontario Curling Championships.
Beuk has twice played in Canada's showcase event for Canadian men's curling teams, now known as the Montana's Brier, qualifying in 2019 with a dominant provincial under Scott McDonald. McDonald went 6-5 at the Nationals in his current hometown of Kingston.
Beuk also played with James Grattan of New Brunswick in the 'curling bubble' in Calgary, going 4-4 in pool play.
Beuk, with Patrick Janssen at third, David Staples at second and Scott Chadwick at lead, opened with an 8-3 win over Ottawa's Brett Lyon-Hatcher.
Lyon-Hatcher is backed by Pascal Michaud, Chris Lewis and Ben Miskew.
After Lyon-Hatcher scored one point in the first end, Beuk took the lead with two points in the second end.
Lyon-Hatcher scored one point in the third end to even the score at two with Beuk retaking the lead with a point in the fourth end.
A steal of two points for Beuk in the fifth end extended that lead to three points, with Lyon-Hatcher again forced to a single point in the seventh end.
Beuk added three points in the eighth end receiving early handshakes in the win.
Beuk advances to play Jayden King of London on Monday evening at the Cobourg Community Centre in Cobourg, Ontario.
