Carruthers, with Jason Gunnlaugson at third, Derek Samagalski at second and Connor Njegovan at lead improved to 18-9 on the season with the win, a turnaround following missing the playoffs at the Boost National two weeks ago. Carruthers held Horgan to a single point in the first end, then scored two points with their hammer opportunity in the second end. Another force in the third end gave Carruthers the hammer back again, this time tied. Carruthers was held to a single point in the fifth end, as the game remained tight into the second half. In the sixth end, the game would change in favour of Carruthers, where a steal of four points would result in handshakes and a surprising early finish. Carruthers won 6-5 over Toronto's John Epping in their first game on Tuesday, while Horgan dropped an 8-2 decision to Scotland's Bruce Mouat. Carruthers takes to the ice next against Brad Gushue of St. John's, in a rematch of the PoinsBet Invitational semifinal where Carruthers won 5-4 to break a 15-game losing streak to the Newfoundland skip. Horgan, at 0-2, has their backs to the wall, and will take on Scotland's Ross Whyte, both games going at 8 pm MT on Thursday.
