Less than 24 hours before opening draw, Kate Hogan (photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC) discovered they'd be only two players in Oakville. A family emergency took Casey Scheidegger and sister Jessie Haughian away from the team on Monday. Hogan and Taylor McDonald, still planning to travel to Oakville, added Manitoba residents Meghan Walter and Mackenzie Elias to the lineup last minute. The pair play for the fast-rising Team Ackland. It took Hogan time to get acclimated, losing their opening game 9-3 to Korea's Eunji Gim, then losing 7-4 to Isabella Wrana of Sweden, putting the team into a position where another loss would eliminate the team. Hogan came out with a 6-4 win over Chelsea Carey of Winnipeg, and then in the morning draw on Friday, won 6-2 over reigning World Champions Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland 6-2. The team had to await results from the afternoon draw, with things settling out where Hogan would play Carey in a rematch in Saturday morning's tiebreaker round. Sweden's Anna Hasselborg will play Michele Jaeggi of Switzerland in the other tiebreaker game, also schedule for 8 am ET. For Scheidegger, an exemption was granted under the World Curling Federation Team Rankings Leave Policy, creating more allowances for teams and the life that goes on around them. Carey, also down to two regular players, has not applied for an exemption and will not be eligibe for points earned this week.
