Gushue and Dunstone in Saturday Slam Tiebreaker
Brad Gushue (photo: Stan Fong, Hardline) of St John's will play Winnipeg's Matt Dunstone at 8 am ET for last playoff berth.
The battle, billed as a heavyweight matchup between brothers will be the first meeting between Gushue-second-stone E.J. Harnden and Dunstone-lead Ryan Harnden.
The brothers were long-time teammates, playing with Brad Jacobs and winning Olympic Gold, a Brier title and many events together.
Now they're facing off first time this season as opponents with a sudden-death tiebreaker game as the setting.
Both coming in at 1-2 on the final round-robin draw at the WFG Masters in Oakville, Ontario, Gushue scored two in the first end on Norway's Magnus Ramsfjell, then added two more in the third end for the early 4-1 lead. Gushue stole one in the sixth end to take a four-point lead, then scored a single in the eighth end for the 7-4 win.
Dunstone needed an extra end to dispatch Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller, 6-5. Dunstone held the lead and control after scoring three in the third end, with Schwaller getting two in the fifth end and two in the eighth end to force an extra end.
The winner of the tiebreaker will meet top-seeded Brendan Bottcher of Calgary in the quarterfinals, playing Saturday at 11:30am ET.
