The 2023 Nova Scotia Tankard is in full swing at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow. Thursday evening's A flight semifinals involved three veteran teams and a younger team with a skip fresh off leading Canada to a bronze medal at the World University Games last week in Lake Placid.

The first A Flight semi-final was a matchup between skips that have both represented their province at the Brier before. Paul Flemming is one of the more recognizable curlers in Nova Scotia, having represented the province at the Brier 11 times. Meanwhile, Flemming's opponent on Thursday evening was Stuart Thompson, who led his team to a 3-4 record at the 2019 Brier, falling one win short of the Championship Pool.

The game between Flemming and Thompson took some time to heat up. The two teams were tied 4-4 after eight ends, then exchanged deuces in the 9th and 10th ends to force an extra. Flemming scored one with the hammer to win the game 7-6.

The other A Flight semi-final was a battle between Owen Purcell, who is just back from Lake Placid and a bronze medal performance at the World University Games while representing Canada and Dalhousie University. His opponent on Thursday evening was Peter Burgess, who was joined by Andrew Burgess, Todd Burgess and Kelly Mittlestadt.

Purcell got off to a quick start, scoring four in the second end, then stealing three in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead into the break. Burgess scored one in the sixth and then shook hands with the young team from Halifax. The team of Purcell, Joel Krats, Adam McEachren and Scott Weagle are now off to the A Flight final, where they will play Team Flemming to see who gets the top seed in the playoffs.
