Hasselborg Wins Players Open
Anna Hasselborg triumphed over Isabella Wrana 9-3 on Sunday in an all-Swedish final to win the Insitu Players Open.
Hasselborg jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three ends and locked up the victory with three points in the sixth.
"It's always a good game against Team Wrana, coming all the way from (Sweden) to (Canada) to battle again," Team Hasselborg said in a social media post after the win.
"Thank you to the Players Tour, the event sponsors, staff, volunteers and ice makers.
"We had a great time at the Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club."
Hasselborg, the 2018 Olympic champion, opened with a deuce and added steals of one and three points in the next two ends.
Wrana got on the board with a deuce in the fourth end and made a game of it with a steal in the fifth. The teams shook hands after six ends.
Hasselborg and third Sara McManus, second Agnes Knochenhauer and lead Sofia Mabergs entered the competition just seven points behind the seventh-ranked Wrana in the women's world team rankings. The team is traveling with a larger entourage of family members supporting the squad on this trip to Canada.
The teams know each other well with 58 career head-to-head meetings between the skips, however, this being the first event since Wrana won a best-of-seven series 4-2 to represent Sweden at the European Curling Championships coming up in November. For Wrana, this will be the first time they represent.
For Hasselborg and Wrana to reach the final of a major tournament with 9 of the 15 top ranked teams in the world shows the strength of the Swedish program, with Hasselborg getting back on the winning side twice against Wrana this weekend.
Hasselbrog won 6-3 win in pool play on Saturday - and has won 39 times over Wrana overall. She won 15 straight at one point before Wrana finally ended her drought in December 2020.
Hasselborg's side, now coached by Kristian Lindstrom, also won Olympic bronze in 2022.
Each member of the team has won seven Grand Slams and two world women's silver medals.
Both Swedish teams will now head to the HearingLife Tour Challenge in Niagara Falls, Ont. Each rink is scheduled to play Tuesday.
Brendan Bottcher defeated Kevin Koe in the Insitu Players Open men's final.
Each 24-team draw featured a purse of $70,000.
