Skrlik Splits Opening Day at Morris Icebreaker

Calgary's Kayla Skrlik went 1-1 on Friday, winning 10-3 over Allory Johnson (St. Paul, Minn.) at the Icebreaker in Morris, Manitoba. Ten women's teams and ten men's teams hit the ice at the Morris Curling Club, located 70 kilometres south of Winnipeg to get an early start on the competitive season. Skrlik saw some change to their lineup after reaching the final of the Alberta Scotties again in 2024. Leaving Skrlik in the summer was long time third Brittany Tran, who ended up at third on Ashley Thevenot's Saskatoon-based team. Tran replaced Skylar Ackerman in the lineup, with Thevenot moving from third to skip. Low and behold, these two teams would face each other out of the gate, with Thevenot winning 8-3 on Friday afternoon. Thevenot leads the way in Pool B with a 2-0 record after winning Friday evening against Christine McMakin of Fargo, North Dakota. Joining Skrlik and front end Geri-Lynn Ramsay and sister Ashton Skrlik for this season is Margot Flemming, having previously played with Kerry Galusha of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Flemming moved over the summer from Yellowknife to Calgary to join the team. In Friday evening's draw against Johnson, Skrlik scored a single in the first end, then handed three to the young Americans. After getting one back in the third end, Skrlik stole three in the fourth end, and one more in the fifth end to lead 6-3 after five ends of play. Skrlik added four more points in the seventh end to seal the 10-4 win. Skrlik next faces Bella Hagenbuch of North Utica, Illinois, at 1 pm CT (Noon MT), then finishes against McMakin at 7 pm. The top six teams qualify for Sunday's playoff round, with the quarterfinals at 9 pm and the championship final beginning at 3 pm.
