Schwaller wins Shorty Spiel

Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller won again on Ontario tour, defeating Scotland's Bruce Mouat 5-3 Sunday in Cornwall. For the second week in a row, Schwaller, with Benoit Schwarz van Berkel throwing fourth stones, and Sven Michel and Pablo Lachat on the front end won a 'max points' event. With a maximum strength of field of seven for any Tour event, Schwaller's win at last week's Stu Sells Oakville Tankard and again this week at the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic max out the points they can currently carry. Entering the season, teams carry 100% of last year's points plus their best two events this season. When a third event slot opens in early October, Schwaller can also add their runner-up finish at the Baden Masters in August. Schwaller opened the game with hammer, their undefeated record giving them the advantage over Mouat, comng in with one loss. Schwaller scored a single point in the first end, then stole a point in the second end to take an early two point advantage. Mouat, with Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan Jr scored two in the third end to get the game back to event. Schwaller scored one point in the fourth end to lead 3-2 at the game's halfway point. After a blank in the fifth end, Mouat evened the score in the sixth end in the tight contest. Schwaller scored a single point in the seventh end to put them up one without hammer in the final end, where they stole a single for the 5-3 win. Schwaller won 6-4 over Montreal's Felix Asselin in the semifinals, while Mouat won 4-3 over Italy's Joel Retornaz. Retornaz won 6-1 over Xiao-ming Xu of China in the quarterfinals, while Mouat won 6-2 over Winnipeg's Matt Dunstone, Asselin won 4-2 over Scotland's Ross Whyte and Schwaller won 7-3 over Kyle Waddell of Scotland.
