Lawes Rolls Through PointsBet Elite 8
Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes (photo: Michael Burns, Curling Canada) won 6-4 over Edmonton's Selena Sturmay on Friday.
Lawes, with Selena Njegovan, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin MacCuish won their second game in the 16-team single knockout host at WinSport in Calgary.
Lawes won the all-important draw for hammer to open the game, using the advantage to blank the first end.
In the second end, Lawes made the draw for two to get on the scoreboard, then stole single points in the third and fourth ends to lead 4-0.
Sturmay, playing a more open fifth end, made the hit for two points.
After the teams traded singles in the sixth and seventh ends, Lawes was heavy on her last draw, bouncing off shot stone and giving Sturmay a stolen point.
Lawes added a single point in the ninth end to lead 6-4 into the final end, where Lawes ran Sturmay out of rocks.
Lawes advances to play Ottawa's Rachel Homan in Saturday's Final 4 round.
