Gushue Wins Slam Opener
An opening draw win for Brad Gushue (St John's) is just what the doctor ordered after Pans playoff slide.
Gushue, with Mark Nichols, Brendan Bottcher and Geoff Walker opened play at the Co-op Canadian Open in Nisku, Alberta with a 6-1 victory over fellow Canadian rink skipped by Reid Carruthers.
Gushue blanked the first end, then follwed up with two points in the second end.
Carruthers, with Catlin Schneider, Derek Samagalski and Connor Njegovan scored a single point in the fourth end, their lone time touching the scoreboard against Gushue.
Gushue added a point in the fifth end, then broke open the game stealing three in the sixth end to take the early decision.
With one game per day through the week, Gushue continues action against Calgary's Kevin Koe at 8pm Mountain Time (MT) on Wednesday, then takes on Niklas Edin at 8pm MT on Thursday and finishes at 8pm on Friday against Switzerland's Michael Brunner.
