Smith Reflects on Coaching at Trillium Curling Camp

Newfoundland & Labrador's Greg Smith spent the past week coaching at the Trillium Curling Camp in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Trillium Curling Camp has closed the book on another summer at the KW Granite Curling Club, with Week A running August 9-14 and Week B following August 16-21.

"Always grateful for the opportunity to coach at Trillium Curling Camp in Kitchener-Waterloo!" posted Smith on Facebook.

"Amazing young curlers, coaches and staff! A week full of fun, learning, and helping coach the next generation of our sport."

One of Ontario's premier junior development programs, Trillium caters to curlers aged 12 to 18 and has called the Kitchener-Waterloo Granite Club home since 2014. The two weeks run identical programs, opening Sunday evening and wrapping up Friday afternoon, with campers billeted at the Waterloo College Hall residence at Wilfrid Laurier University. Each week hosts a full contingent of 96 junior curlers.

On the ice, certified instructors work with campers on everything from delivery mechanics to brushing technique. Off the ice, the curriculum covers team dynamics, fitness, communication and strategy. Campers are placed individually into colour groups by age rather than arriving as intact teams - a deliberate choice to push kids into new friendships and balance the learning across groups. It's aimed at experienced youth athletes and is not a learn-to-curl program.
