On Monday, I had the pleasure of speaking to Dr. Richard Norman, a strategist, researcher, and futurist working at the borderlands of sport and society, about his new book (re)Pebbling: A Story of Blackness and Curling. I first met Dr. Norman at last year’s Play the Game conference in Tampere, Finland, where he lifted the veil on the world of curling and the socio-economic and racial politics embedded in this quintessentially Canadian pastime. As someone who is rarely blindsided with a subject matter in the world of sports that I knew this little about, it was like delving into an entirely new world. Since then, his book has been one of my most anticipated reads of the year and, when I finally got my hands on an advance copy, it did not disappoint.

Just a few metres from the Colosseum, Italians try their luck at a temporary curling rink in the scorching summer heat. Three ice-free lanes have been set up near the famous Roman amphitheatre by a group of tutors, who help curious onlookers grasp the basics of the winter sport. "What's brilliant about doing it here in Rome in the summer is precisely that you can enjoy all this," says tourist Pietro Valli, pointing at the Colosseum behind him.

U.S. curling fans… we’ve got more news to share! The Grand Slam of Curling and Rock League announced today a new three-year agreement with ESPN, bringing more than 300 hours of live curling coverage to U.S. audiences during the 2026-27 season. Live coverage from every event throughout the season will be available in the U.S. on ESPN+ on the ESPN App.

Sudbury-born curler Kira Brunton and her teammate Jacob Horgan have been named to Curling Canada's national team program as a development team. The mixed doubles duo will receive funding and access to sport science support. Brunton says the program brings them one step closer to making curling a career, she sits down with Tony Ryma to discuss the opportunity.

Saturday night curling is coming to CBC this fall. The Grand Slam of Curling and Rock League announced Thursday new five-year broadcast agreements with CBC and Sportsnet. Under the landmark agreements, Canadian fans will be able to watch more than 300 hours of Grand Slam of Curling and Rock League coverage on linear television during the 2026-27 season, roughly double the amount compared to previous years. Sportsnet is expanding its weekday television coverage of every Grand Slam of Curling event and will now start on the opening day of round-robin play Tuesday with three draws daily through Friday. Saturday’s playoff games will slide over to CBC, CBC Gem and Sportsnet+. Championship Sunday wraps things up on Sportsnet with select finals also on CBC. Fans will never miss a moment as Rock Channel will continue to provide additional livestreaming coverage. "Having Sportsnet and CBC on board broadcasting more curling than ever is amazing for everyone involved and for the future of our sport," said two-time Olympic gold medallist and seven-time Grand Slam champ Brad Jacobs. "The more opportunities we have to showcase the game and the athletes at the highest level, the more we can continue to grow curling and bring new fans." "The level of competition in curling right now is incredible and the excitement around the sport is bigger than ever," added Rachel Homan, who has won a record 20 Grand Slam titles as a skip. "The increased coverage of both the Grand Slam of Curling and Rock League creates a great opportunity to reach new audiences, grow the game, and showcase how exciting and competitive curling has become. The Grand Slam of Curling is entering its 26th season and consists of five marquee events on tour featuring the world’s best men’s and women’s teams competing for top ranking points and equal prize money. The Grand Slam season begins with the GSOC Invitational, Oct. 13-18, at Victoria’s Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Fans got a taste of Rock League, curling’s first professional league featuring six global mixed-gender franchises, when it made its debut in April with a one-week preview season. Jacobs captained Shield Curling Club to the inaugural title. Now comes the main course as Rock League expands to a full season, running select weeks in January and April 2027. CBC TV and CBC Gem will continue to provide coverage of every match, with select matches on Thursdays and Fridays on Radio-Canada’s streaming service ICI TOU.TV and Sportsnet. The Curling Group owns and operates both the Grand Slam of Curling and Rock League. “We’re so lucky to have such passionate fans in curling, and it’s really exciting knowing they’re going to get to see so much more of us this season,” said Kerri Einarson, who has won six Grand Slam titles and captured the inaugural Rock League title with Shield Curling Club. “Having more games on Sportsnet and CBC gives people across the country more chances to follow the teams, get to know the players and hopefully fall in love with the sport the way we have.”

Rock League brought the energy all week long at the TMU Mattamy Athletic Centre. From Family Day and Tailgate Tuesday to Typhoon Takeover, Pride Night, Go Bananas, and Saturday Night Fever, every day delivered a new vibe and a packed fan experience beyond the ice. One of the biggest highlights was Lightning Ends at Fan Fest, where fans went head-to-head in fast-paced 2-on-2 battles for the chance to play alongside Rock League athletes. Now, after a full week of unforgettable moments, it all came down to Championship Sunday - a final that delivered beyond expectations.

Sault Ste. Marie holds a hometown celebration for Sault native and Two-Time Olympic Gold Medalist in Men's Curling, Brad Jacobs. City Council unanimously agreed to formally rename a portion of Anita Boulevard, directly in front of the curling centre to 'Team Jacobs Way' so that the YNCU Curling Centre's new address would effectively be '1 Team Jacobs Way'. Former Team Jacobs coach Tom Coulterman was also recognized and thanked with an award during the celebration. A street sign unveiling event will follow.

Xenia Schwaller is a Swiss curler from Zurich. She currently skips her own team out of the Grasshopper Club Zurich. As skip, Schwaller notably won her first world women's title at the 2026 World Women's Curling Championship.

Canada's Matt Dunstone suffered his first loss at the world men's curling championship with an 8-3 defeat to Scotland's Ross Whyte in Saturday afternoon's draw. Scotland (1-2) took an early lead with a deuce in the first end followed by steals of one in the second and third. Dunstone got two back in the fourth, but Whyte took a commanding 7-2 lead with three in the fifth. Dunstone's Winnipeg team, representing Canada for the first time at the world championship, opened the tournament with wins over South Korea and Italy on Friday. Canada (2-1) will next face the United States on Sunday.

By knocking out defending champion Scott Howard in Sunday’s Ontario men’s curling championship final at the Cobourg Community Centre, skip Sam Mooibroek’s rink booked their ticket to this year’s Montana’s Brier. Mooibroek along with third Ryan Wiebe, second Scott Mitchell and lead Nathan Steele, representing the Whitby Curling Club, went undefeated in five games, including two wins over Howard. The first was in Friday night’s 1 versus 2 Page playoff game and that victory sent Mooibroek directly to the final with Howard needing a semifinal final win Saturday night over Mark Kean.

Team Kelly Knapp will once again wear the green and white, representing Saskatchewan at the 2026 Montana's Brier.
